From my half assed knowledge of the functioning of the Internet, it is basically computers (servers included) connected to a huge LAN cable. What the ISP does is provide the wire to connect your device with the huge cable. What would I be needing in order to connect to the "cable" without an ISP and what would be an estimated cost of the materials?

Servers don't connect "directly" to the internet because there is no single company that owns the internet.
